History of Gran Colombia
Gran Colombia was a republic that did not last very long. It lasted from 1819 to 830 and consisted of Colombia, Panama, Venezuela, and Ecuador. While fighting for independence from Spain led by Simon Bolivar, a government was able to be formed. Originally the government was an army but later on, it was turned into a proper government with Simon Bolivar as president and the capital being Botoga in Colombia which is the capital of Colombia to this day. Gran Colombia was then reorganized into 3 different regions with a legislature for each of the 3 regions. These regions are shown on the map to the right. Gran Colombia was doing well during the war but some rivalry arose between the military and the public. Due to jealousy from different regions, an uprising began in Venezuela. Simon Bolivar made a call for Gran Colombia to be reorganized leaving only Colombia and Panama part of Gran Colombia. This meant the northern coast was left where Simon Bolivar would soon die ending Gran Colombia and Nueva Granada which was the name of Colombia and Panama when they left Gran Colombia.
