Geography of Colombia
Colombia is considered an above average sized country in northern South America and is a little less than twice the size of Texas. The Andes mountain range passes through parts of Colombia and the highest point in Colombia is referred to as Pico Cristobal Colon and Pico Simon Bolivar. It is a part of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain range. Colombia has about 4 different regions, the central highlands, the Atlantic lowlands, the Pacific lowlands, and eastern Colombia. The Atlantic lowlands consist of plains North to the highlands which are connected with the Cauca and Magdalena river valleys. The Pacific lowlands consist of just jungles and swamps and is a moist environment with many rivers running through it like the American Highway. There are also 3 different climate zones. One of which is the hot zone, which has an average temperature of 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit. The hot zone covers 90% of the country and is usually below 3,000 feet. There is also the temperate zone. This zone is located about 3,000-6,500 feet above sea level. Meanwhile, the temperate zone covers 8% of the country and has an average temperature of about 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperate zone is usually found in valleys around the country. The last zone is the cool zone. This zone has an average temperature of 50-66 degrees Fahrenheit which is the coldest of all the zones. The cool zone is located at about 6,500 feet or more above sea level, the highest of all the zones. The cool zone is located in places like the plateaus and terraces of the Colombian Andes. Colombia is located near the equator which is why its temperature isn't majorly affected by where you are in Colombia but it matters how high up you are. Compared to other countries like the U.S. which has many different climate zones with temperatures that vary depending on where you are in the country. Colombia is not like that, and its climates are extremely less diverse and more similar to each other. Overall Colombia has diverse regions but similar temperatures when it comes to elevations.
